This enchanting perfume is handing over the soothing scents and decorative wrappers to the buyers. Mohammad Mahtabur Rahman is one of the richest Bangladeshi expatriates by selling perfume. He has been awarded CIP four times in a row by the Government of Bangladesh. He has received the last three remittance awards from Bangladesh Bank for bringing the most foreign currency to the country. In addition to developing advanced formulas and lovely packaging and modern marketing systems and fancy perfumes, the group is currently involved in the country’s healthcare, tea gardening, education and banking and capital management businesses. Mahtabur Rahman is also the chairman of NRB Bank, which was established by expatriate entrepreneurs. Asked how he got into this business, Mohammad Mahtabur Rahman said, “It started with my father’s hand.” My father’s name is Maulana Kazi Abdul Haq. Our village home is in Nateshwar village of Beanibazar in Sylhet. Agar wood was made in Sujanagar of Sylhet. That agar wood was used to make many beautiful perfumes. But there was no market for that agar wood in Bangladesh.
Agarwood was marketed in neighboring countries including India. When my father first went to Saudi Arabia for Hajj in 1958, he took with him some agarwood. As agar continues to grow in popularity among Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia, my father plans to start a perfume business there. In 1960, he started a perfume business in the holy city of Mecca. I first went to Saudi Arabia in 1975 with my father. Then I just passed the high school and took the BA exam. After that Mahtabur Rahman did not have to look back. He became proficient in the perfume business in a very short time. He opened his first showroom in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) in 1981. Later, he set up a well-equipped head office on an area of 11,000 square feet in Dubai to facilitate business operations. He set up a factory on an area of 16,215 square meters.
The factory is using state-of-the-art, semi-automatic and state-of-the-art perfumery. He has opened a research and development department to create new perfumes using advanced technology. Later he spread this business to all the countries of the Middle East. The ISO certified perfume is currently being exported to 65 countries around the world. Addressing new expatriates who want to invest abroad, Mahtabur Rahman said, “I am the founding president of the Bangladesh Business Council and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bangladesh Islamic School in Dubai. We always invite foreigners to come to our country.
We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the FBCCI, the apex business body of Bangladesh. Under this, we provide various suggestions to foreigners who are interested in investing in Bangladesh. But we have repeatedly called on the government to make the process of investing foreigners in Bangladesh one-stop service. Otherwise, they suffer a lot.
