Exclusive news Desk: An Australian minister has resigned after visiting Hong Kong and meeting a young woman through an online dating website. Andrew Broad, aide to Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, spent time with the young woman at a restaurant during a visit to Hong Kong last month.
Broad resigned on Monday after the young woman made such a claim in an interview with Australia’s weekly New Idea magazine. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said he accepted the resignation letter sent by Andrew Broad after the woman’s interview was published in New Idea magazine.
In an e-mailed statement, McCormack said, “Because of the nature of the allegations, Broad’s resignation as deputy prime minister’s assistant minister is very reasonable.”
However, a spokesman for Broad declined to comment immediately. “The Australian Federal Police have been notified and I will not comment further,” Broad told New Idea magazine.
New Idea magazine has published an interview with a young woman named ‘Amy’ from Hong Kong. The young woman complained that a dating website has Broad’s profile. On the website, rich and old men meet teenagers and young women after online conversations. However, the young woman did not reveal the name of the dating website.
According to the Australian weekly magazine, Broad spent time with 20-year-old Amy. Amy said she agreed to meet Broad for dinner at a Hong Kong restaurant. But after arriving at the restaurant, he left the restaurant without dinner as he did not like Broad’s behavior.
