Declaration of Ceasefire: Take steps to establish lasting peace in Yemen

hura menAbu Tahir Mustakim: A ceasefire has finally been declared in Yemen. The Saudi-led Arab League made the much-desired announcement. The announcement opened the door to a political solution in the war-torn country. It will also be easier to fight the spread of coronavirus in Yemen.
The ceasefire will last for two weeks. A spokesman for the Arab League said a ceasefire had been called by the United Nations during the global outbreak of the coronavirus. Despite the pause, the announcement provided an opportunity for all parties in Yemen to discuss proposals, measures and strategies for a lasting ceasefire. The warring parties in Yemen have the opportunity to reach a comprehensive political solution.
The ceasefire was announced at a critical time in Yemen. There have been no official reports of coronary heart disease in the country. However, UN and aid workers have warned that the spread of the virus in Yemen could be catastrophic. Because, five years ago, after Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels overthrew the legitimate government of the country, the health care infrastructure in the war-torn country has become almost paralyzed.
Arab leaders welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire. They called it an intelligent, responsible and timely decision. They hope the Huthi rebels will accept the initiative. It will also allow the international community to continue its humanitarian efforts to protect the people of Yemen.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire, calling for an end to the conflict in all parts of the world and a fight against the global epidemic. He also hoped that the ceasefire would help the country move forward on the path of peace. He also called for an immediate end to all hostilities, as promised by the Huthi rebels.
Peace talks between the two sides will begin after the ceasefire, officials said. Earlier peace talks failed because of Huthi rebels. The Houthis have refused to comply with the UN resolution and the 2014 GCC-mediated peace effort.
Therefore, the new phase of the ceasefire has brought the opportunity for the United Nations to take immediate action. And the Houthi rebels need to be committed to peace and resolute in advancing peace talks.
Iran, a Shiite Houthi rebel and their main supporter, must step forward in the peace efforts of the Yemeni people. Because the people of Yemen are facing the brutality of the Houthi rebels on the one hand and the terrible threat of the coronavirus on the other.
